What type of game is VQ_Project?
It’s meant to be a single-player RPG with a strong narrative component. I hope it will offer a bit of innovation on the genre’s core concepts.
Is VQ_Project the game title?
No, it is a working title. I have a real title in mind, but since the game is in a very early stage, I don’t want to use it yet. I think it’s an excellent title, and I am afraid someone can steal it 😀
What is your stack?
My basic stack is Unreal 5.4 and Blender 4.3. I also use GIMP for some image processing
Why don’t you write your game engine?
The most straightforward answer is: because I really, really want to finish this game. Since I have a family and work full-time, I expect it to take some time. Building my game engine in my spare time, I would attempt only if I was independently wealthy (and had a hope to live 100 years)
Why do you think game development is a fine hobby?
I think it’s the best hobby because it encompasses many different art forms: writing, visual arts, and music. You can go insane and try to do everything yourself, or you can pick whatever suits your fancy and specialize and feel the gaps with the work of more competent art creators.
When do you find time to work on your game?
Realistically, I can devote about 15 hours a week to this project. Some of this time is my commute time, but most is my free time on weekends/afternoons.
When do you expect your game to reach Early Access/Demo on the Steam stage?
My completely uneducated estimate is that I can have a vertical slice ready by the end of 2025, By a vertical slice I mean the first area playable with one to two hours of content. One of the reasons I decided to start my development blog is to set some artificial deadlines. It all depends on how successful I am in stemming the feature creep.
What is your main motivation for working on VQ_Project?
I want to see how far I can go by maintaining a steady but systematic pace and commitment to the project. I think that for many projects, it’s the main challenge.
